What is a Ski Sommelier™?
If you're an accomplished traveler who's spent a fortune at North American resorts but come up short on value, or if you've planned European ski trips only to feel like you missed the insider experience - the hidden powder stashes, the family-run mountain huts serving legendary Tiroler gröstl or knödel, the après-ski bars locals actually prefer - then you're not alone. The good news is there's a solution that transforms good ski experiences into extraordinary ones.
This article introduces the concept of a Ski Sommelier™: part luxury travel planner, part cultural guide, part mountain companion who unlocks the authentic Alpine experience you've been missing.
By the end of this article, you'll understand exactly how a Ski Sommelier™ saves you time and money while delivering the kind of immersive, insider-access ski vacation that most travelers never discover on their own.
What Exactly Is a Ski Sommelier™?
An Expert in Joyful Living
A Ski Sommelier™ or Ski Somm® is not a ski instructor or guide. Eat Drink Fun won't teach you how to carve turns or navigate avalanche terrain. Instead, we're experts in the complete Alpine resort experience: the history, culture, cuisine, wine, and hidden context that transforms a ski trip from athletic pursuit into cultural immersion.
Think of us as the bridge between high-end travel planning and authentic local knowledge that only decades of experience can provide. For more information, see the Ski Somm® page.
The Role's Origins and Evolution
The concept emerged from a simple observation: luxury travelers were booking expensive European ski vacations but missing 80% of what makes these destinations extraordinary. We recognized that successful professionals have the resources but often not the time, deep language skills, or insider relationships to unlock the true Alpine experience.
A Ski Sommelier™ fills this gap by combining expert logistics with on-mountain companionship and cultural education.
Planning Services: Let EDF Do the Heavy Lifting
Destination, Village, and Resort Selection
For every Custom Adventure, we begin by determining the ideal destination and specific village that matches your skiing ability, travel style, budget, and experience goals. This decision alone can make or break your trip. Choosing between the Dolomites' endless groomed terrain and St. Anton's legendary back country steeps and unmatched après-ski culture requires insider knowledge, not TripAdvisor reviews.
We leverage decades of personal experience and relationships across European ski resorts to match you with the perfect location.
Lodging, Transportation, and Logistics Coordination
We book lodging that suits your specific goals and budget, from family-run chalets with nearby Michelin-starred dining to ski-in/ski-out luxury hotels. Ground transportation is next, and we help guests arrange private transfers, rental cars, or train connections based on your preferences.
We handle the tedious details: securing ski guides and instructors, identifying the best equipment rental shops, advising on lift pass purchases and travel insurance.
Communication and Vendor Management
Perhaps most valuable is our role as your advocate and translator with local vendors, including hotels, car services, ski guides, and restaurants. We communicate on your behalf in the local language, leverage our relationships for preferential treatment, and solve problems before they reach you.
This service alone saves our clients countless hours of frustration and often results in better rates and access than booking independently.
Culinary Planning and Insider Dining Access
We make reservations at the best restaurants based on your preferences and budget, including hard-to-book mountain huts and Michelin-starred establishments. You'll receive detailed advice on regional foods, beverages, and wines, helping you target which local specialties to seek out, which wine producers to visit, and which tourist gaffes to avoid.
Our recommendations come from personal relationships with hoteliers, chefs, sommeliers, and restaurant owners built over years of repeat visits.
In-Person Experience: Your Cultural Companion
What We Do On the Mountain
When we join you on the slopes, we're not teaching skiing technique. We are instead providing context and cultural education that brings the mountain to life. As we ski together, we explain the history of the villages below and the battles fought in high alpine passes, the significance of architectural styles, the stories behind family-run refuges, and the evolution of Alpine cuisine.
We point out the terrain features that matter, helping you understand why certain mountains and pistes get their names, and the stories of the legends who made them famous.
Food, Wine, and Après-Ski Education
Our expertise shines during mountain lunches and après-ski, where we guide guests through regional wine lists, explain the provenance of local charcuterie and cheeses, and introduce you to specialty spirits. We teach you how to identify quality regional ingredients, which wine producers are worth visiting in the valley, and how to navigate Alpine culinary customs.
This education continues beyond the slopes. We join you for après parties and dinners where appropriate, facilitating connections with owners and ensuring you and your fellow guests experience the destination like an informed insider.
The Full Immersion Philosophy
Our goal is full cultural immersion: you're not just skiing and eating, you're understanding the "why" behind everything you experience. We share stories, historical context, and local insights that turn each meal, each run, and each village into a richer, more meaningful experience.
By the end of your trip, you'll understand the region not as a tourist but as someone with genuine appreciation for its culture, history, and mountain way of life.
Why This Service Exists: The Problem We Solve
The Time, Money, and Stress Equation
Luxury travelers have resources but often lack time to research hundreds of hotels, coordinate multiple vendors, and build the local relationships that unlock authentic experiences. DIY planning often leads to costly mistakes: wrong villages, mediocre lodging, missed restaurant reservations, and wasted days troubleshooting logistics, sometimes in foreign languages.
We do 90% of the heavy lifting - the planning, coordination, and problem-solving that would otherwise consume weeks of your time and frequently costs more due to lack of insider access.
The Insider Knowledge You Can't Buy
Guidebooks and review sites can't tell you which ski guide has the best knowledge of off-piste terrain, which mountain hut serves the best Kaiserschmarrn, or which hotel owner will bring out the very special bottle of brandy based on a personal relationship. Our decades of experience skiing, traveling, and drinking wine in Europe have built a network of relationships and knowledge that simply cannot be replicated through research.
This insider access is the difference between a good ski vacation and an extraordinary one that feels impossibly well-orchestrated.
For the Traveler Who Values Experience Over Bragging Rights
Our ideal clients are successful professionals who prioritize authentic experiences over Instagram moments and standard luxury amenities. You want to understand what you're experiencing, the story behind the wine you're drinking, the history of the valley you're skiing through, and the cultural significance of the meal the chef prepared.
If you're the type of traveler who comes home from trips feeling enriched in addition to being more relaxed, a Ski Sommelier™ delivers exactly what you're seeking.

The In-Person Companion Option
For clients who want the full immersive experience, we join you on the mountain as your cultural companion and advisor. This typically involves skiing together, sharing meals, and providing the real-time education and context that transforms your understanding of the destination.
During the summer months this may include joining you on hikes or bike rides, during special cultural events, on your boat, or at the beach for a private tasting.
We tailor our involvement to your preferences. Some clients want us present for the entire trip, while others prefer just a few key days.
Finally, some guests prefer a retainer arrangement in which Eat Drink Fun helps them curate and expand their personal wine collections. As long as you pursue your interest in new flavors and experiences, Eat Drink Fun will strive to support you, including referring you to our partners who may be experts in a particular niche.
Investment and Value Proposition
Our service represents an investment in the quality and depth of your travel and epicurean experience, not just the logistics. When you factor in the time saved, costly mistakes avoided, and preferential access gained through our relationships, our clients consistently find the value proposition compelling.
Beyond the tangible benefits, the intangible value of truly understanding and connecting with a place, rather than just visiting it, is what our clients treasure most.
Elevating Your Next European Adventure
A Ski Sommelier™ transforms Alpine ski vacations and other European adventures from expensive novelty trips into rich cultural experiences that satisfy both body and mind. If you're ready to experience the Alps the way locals and true insiders do, with expert planning, seamless logistics, and cultural education that brings every moment to life, then we invite you to explore our Ski Sommelier™ Consulting service.
Your next ski experience doesn't have to be another blur of sterile hotels, heat lamp food, epicly bad traffic, and iconically long lift lines that, unfortunately, we have been conditioned to accept in North America. Instead, it can be an immersive, enlightening adventure you've always wanted but didn't know how to access in the Alps.
