Drink Responsibly

Too much of anything results in negative outcomes. Alcohol abuse harms you, your family, your friends, and the people around you. Eat Drink Fun advocates for moderation, especially when consuming alcohol.
Ethyl alcohol is a naturally occurring toxin; we should treat it with due respect. Recently, the science of alcohol consumption has become politicized.
Since antiquity, alcohol has played a critical role in human life and culture. Wine is the centerpiece of Judeo-Christian religious ceremonies. Christ’s first miracle was to transform water into exceptional wine (John 2:1-11). The United States has a poor history with alcohol. Americans amended their Constitution twice regarding alcohol. By banning alcohol, organized crime, government corruption, and public criminality became widespread in the United States.
Positive wine and beverage culture should be studied, practiced, and promoted. For millennia, Greeks have valued moderate wine consumption. The Greek word for wine, “krasi”, is derived from the ancient word “kekramenos”, which was the practice of diluting wine with water to prevent inebriation and mitigate against acts of hubris. Wines of Greece provides excellent information on moderate wine consumption.
Across the globe, families break bread, friends reunite, and communities celebrate with wines, spirits, and beers. Alcohol brings us together, but it can potentially tear us apart if abused.
Despite recent fear-mongering from interest groups alleging that alcohol is unhealthy, data in fact show that life expectancy is higher and public health expenditures are lower in countries where moderate alcohol consumption is a historical and customary norm.
With that in mind, EDF supports the responsible, moderate consumption of alcohol (and less consumption of unnatural, hyper-processed foods).
Savor your drink. Enjoy it with healthy foods. Don’t binge. Stay hydrated.
